Major Fire – November 2014

At approximately 8.00pm on 13 November 2014, Marleton Cross Ltd, the largest producer of shower trays in the UK, had a fire in the main production area.

Due to where and how the fire started, within minutes it was out of control. This was due to the items/chemicals used in the production process.

The Fire Brigade were on site within a few minutes and over 15 appliances attended from all over Gloucester and south Worcestershire.

The fire occurred in the middle unit of a block of 3, and the Fire Brigade were able to prevent it spreading.

We were advised of the fire at approximately 9.00pm, and were on site before 10.00pm.

The blaze was brought under control and extinguished in the early hours of the 14th.  Dampening down was to continue for another 24 hours. The fire had been truly devastating, destroying the main shower tray production facility.

Overnight we contacted the Insurers advising them of the fire, and by 8.00am on the 14th, when we were back on site, we had confirmation that Loss Adjusters had been appointed.  In addition to this we had also called in a specialist Disaster Recovery De-contamination contractor, and they were on site during the morning.

We were able to assist Marleton Cross in developing and putting in place plans for the recovery.

A press release was made to all customers and suppliers on the 14th, saying production would be recommencing in a few days.

This was achieved by late Monday 17 November having worked nonstop for 3 days, together with the support of suppliers and the Disaster Recovery Contractors.

Over the following weeks the plans were put in place for the new factory, working closely with the Insurers to ensure the design of the new plant could prevent any repeat event.

The Insurers quickly approved of the plans and agreed to maintain the required support under the Business Interruption Insurance and also continue to provide cover. This support included funding the cost of a new temporary production line and the increased temporary workforce required, plus additional buildings rented to ensure that shower tray production continued.

The new state of the art production facility was installed over the 2015 Christmas shutdown and is now one of the most efficient shower tray production facilities anywhere in the World.

By having correctly arranged cover and a good relationship with Insurers we were able to ensure that MX not just survived this catastrophe, but are also a more stronger, more efficient and market leading producer of bathroom shower equipment.
